Neil Elan recently shared his insights with Quartz regarding Apple's enhanced user privacy and its groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, both announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. In the first Quartz piece titled "Apple will force the AI industry to better protect user privacy, expert says," Elan discusses Apple's commitment to leveraging hardware for AI tools through Private Cloud Compute. This approach, aimed at bolstering privacy on devices like iPhones, iPads, and Macs, could set a new standard in the AI sector.
Given Apple’s strong market position, this shift could force other AI companies to follow suit. Elan explained Apple’s new privacy standards “could establish a standard that other AI operators would then need to be held to.” He added that Apple could “cause a lot of other AI providers and operators to increase their security processes and protections and adopt similar safeguards.”
In the second article titled, "Could Apple's ChatGPT partnership expose it to legal risks?," Elan suggests that while any legal implications might not directly impact Apple, they could impact its reputation. He notes, "Data privacy is a bigger legal risk for Apple when it comes to its partnership with OpenAI than copyright infringement," and continued to say, “there’s no guarantee that it will be successful and it will protect all the users in the way that Apple represents.”
