Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, LLP is pleased to announce that John R. De La Merced has been named to the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” list for 2024. This selective list honors the best lawyers under the age of 40 in California. In his profile for the special issue, the Daily Journal highlights John’s representation of high-profile clients in complex business litigation matters, as well as his career path and journey into law.
“I’m the first in my family to go to law school,” John told the Daily Journal. “I got interested during high school debates. I felt the skills would translate, so I looked for a career as a litigator.”
The profile also covers an ongoing case in which John represents Singapore Airlines Ltd. and recently obtained for his client state recognition or “domestication” of foreign judgments totaling $7.145 million, using California’s Uniform Foreign-Country Money Judgments Recognition Act.
“Singapore Airlines litigated this case in Singapore courts for years and prevailed there against this California company, and they were looking to domesticate the judgment,” John explained. “We were able to obtain summary judgment after demonstrating that the proceedings in Singapore were fair and proper — even though they opposed us every step of the way."
When discussing the ongoing cases he has in Michigan and New York, John showed appreciation for SA&M's litigation of matters nationally: "That makes this a great practice with varieties of subject matter to learn about. I’m glad I made the move here.”
