The concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging have been around for decades, even though ubiquitous recognition of the need to establish policies that promote these important principles became prevalent over the last half-dozen years as the broader national debate over social justice became mainstream.
At SA&M, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging have always been important to the Firm. Although they may not have been historically expressed in those words, we believe they are integral to a culture we have been working hard to develop and maintain for nearly 25 years. We believe that fostering a culture where every person feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives shapes how we treat our professional and administrative staff, and enhances the opportunities we offer to prospective employees, the services we provide our clients, and the relationships we build with those who do business with our Firm.
These are not just words to us. We own our continuing journey of maintaining an inclusive, diverse and equitable workplace, while fostering a strong sense of belonging, together with an unwavering commitment to provide quality and excellence in the services we provide our clients. One way we advance this commitment is by maintaining an active internal committee that includes representatives from all levels of the Firm, including staff, attorneys and partners in various practice areas. This committee focuses on professional development, training, mentorship and overall Firm culture, ensuring that our commitment to these values translates into meaningful action every day.
Our approach centers on openness and Firm-wide engagement. We maintain active affinity groups which welcome participation from all members of the Firm to share experience and deeply understand what is unique to each of us, including highlighting specific challenges and elevating general awareness across the entire Firm.
This work is ongoing. We remain committed to cultivating a culture where belonging isn't an aspiration—it's the lived experience of everyone at our Firm.
