Dan Rozansky recently spoke to Scripps News on a segment for ‘In The Loop.’ The segment entitled, “Why rap artists end up in court over their songs” explores how rap lyrics have historically been used as evidence for criminal convictions, creating a racial and music genre issue at large, for many artists.
Because of this issue, California recently passed a law to ban lyrics as evidence in the courtroom. Dan explains this enforces overall context to be considered in a case and allows the judge to separate the art from the artists. He went on to explain, “The court will look at credible testimony on the genre creative expression as to the social or cultural context, rules, conventions, and artistic techniques of the expression.”
