Our History

Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, LLP was founded in 2002 by Joe Stubbs, Scott Alderton, Murray Markiles, John McIlvery and Greg Akselrud. Having built significant practices while together at Troop, Steuber, Pasich, Reddick and Tobey, LLP, a large regional law firm in Los Angeles, California, and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP, a large international firm, the founders were determined to build a better platform to adequately service their emerging growth and middle market client base. They formed Stubbs Alderton & Markiles to focus specifically on providing unparalleled corporate, securities, mergers & acquisitions and intellectual property law expertise in connection with the representation of emerging growth and technology companies, middle market public companies, large technology companies, investors, private equity funds, investment bankers and underwriters, and clients in the entertainment industry.

Since its founding, the Firm has grown to more than 20 lawyers, having recruited former partners and other colleagues from top national and international law firms. Stubbs Alderton & Markiles prides itself on its innovative, “out of the box” spirit. The past few years have resulted in exciting growth within the Firm.

In November 2012, Stubbs Alderton & Markiles expanded its physical presence, opening a second office and its Preccelerator Program in Santa Monica, CA. The Preccelerator Program is a new platform offered to select start-up companies out of our Santa Monica office that utilizes the Firm’s fixed fee startup package and provides interim office space and sophisticated legal services, with the objective of helping startups grow their idea from business concept to funded startup. The Preccelerator Program provides free co-working space and other perks for promising young startups.

March 2013 brought about the expansion of its Intellectual Property practice, by adding a Brand Development & Content Protection practice. This practice concentrates on IP litigation, brand development, content protection, enforcement and registration, and includes a trademark prosecution capability.

In March 2014 the firm launched a Business Litigation group in response to the growing needs of our emerging growth client base. Our business litigators, consistent with the focus of the other attorneys at the Firm, seek to forge long term relationships with our clients throughout their evolutionary path. We deliver efficiency and value to every client we serve through a well-defined budget and clear communication about their case.

In the midst of this growth, the Firm’s mission continues to be to provide technically excellent legal services in a consistent, highly-responsive and service-oriented manner with an entrepreneurial and practical business perspective. These principles are the hallmarks of the Firm.

A Word From Our Team

“We launched the firm in 2002 to offer a different kind of legal platform where senior experienced lawyers could provide technically excellent legal services with a focus on client service for matters within our core legal disciplines, while at the same time adding strategic value to management by solving all of our clients’ legal challenges, engaging and managing legal services outside our scope of expertise where needed. By serving clients from the smallest start-up to taking Skype™ from formation to exit, we have proven that this nimble, entrepreneurial model of providing legal services works not only for the entrepreneur, but also for the largest companies in the world.”
