The state of education in Los Angeles is in crisis. California is 47th in per-pupil educational funding and fewer than 50% of our students are proficient in English and math. The city that has provided the tech industry so much is failing, and we should find a way to help.
Joining with our contacts in the Interactive Entertainment space, SAM is hosting an exclusive presentation and mixer event with representatives from the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) on Thursday, March 7, 2013 in our Santa Monica Office. Marcia Aaron, founder and Executive Director of KIPP LA Schools will be presenting at this event.
KIPP is a national network of public charter schools that is transforming the approach to education in Los Angeles. In communities where only 4% of students graduate from college, a full 84% of KIPP graduates are currently matriculating in higher education. Los Angeles needs KIPP to grow, and we have asked Marcia to engage with the leaders of those in the technology industry in Southern California, about how we may help.
Our hope is that this should be a thought-provoking and lively event about how we can better our industry, our city and our kids.
